Jul 16, 2011 Has anyone's doctor suggested taking plaquenil to help taper off prednisone. My Rheum thinks that plaquenil will help me get to a lower dose of prednisone since I can't get past 7.5 mg without a flare. Hello all, I am currently new to this site and ran across the discussion about stopping Plaquenil. I have been taking Plaquenil for about 8-9 months and thought that it was not helping me because I still have a fair amount of joint pain, fatigue, muscle pain and so many other issues. Thanks for the replies I'm on 200mg of paquenil twice a day I think the main reason the consultant suggested stopping it for a month was because I probably came over quite wishy washy as to whether it was helping me or not and he basically said quite often the best way to tell how much it is helping is to stop it for a month and see if you feel worse which I the time I thought made sense?

Tell your doctor if you have these side effects. A lower dose may stop them. Do not lower the dose on your own. Plaquenil stays in your body for about 3 months. If you must stop it, it will take a while for the side effects to go away. When people first decrease the dose, it's not uncommon to feel achy or fatigued. These symptoms often resolve over two to seven days. If symptoms don't resolve, a doctor may elect to temporarily increase the dose and taper more slowly.
