Nov 12, 2009 Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. If you're gonna experiment, I went off it cold turkey as it didn't hurt to do it that way, but you better get back on before the summer or you could experience a flare-up. I can't believe you were told to stop taking plaquenil after only 6 months since it can take up to one YEAR to achieve full benefits! I don't know much about any sort of withdrawal but if I were you I'd start taking it again. I'd also have your thyroid checked. I'm hypothyroid and take levo along with he plaquenil. I took plaquenil on and off over a period of yrs. Stopped talikg fist time because it reacts with the sun. Got over heated one day and head felt like it was on fire. It was also causing hair loss. My doctor took me off it at the time. Because of A problem I have taking arthritis meds he suggested I try it again.
