Plaquenil can cause serious side effects when used in high doses for chronic diseases such as RA over the long term. The New Zealand Dermatological Society recommends that to decrease the risk of retina damage, no more than 200mg of Plaquenil should be taken a day, and a dose of 400mg per day should be taken no longer than a few weeks. I have been on Plaquenil for two years for RA, for which it has been great apart from a bit of itchiness, which I've mentioned elsewhere on this site in reply to another member asking about this. But lately the skin on my arms looks a bit blotchy. By this I mean that there are numerous small whiter-coloured circles whiter than the surrounding skin, anyway, almost like scars, or rather like. Plaquenil comes in 200 milligram mg tablets that are taken by mouth. To prevent malaria in adults, two tablets are typically taken once a week, on the same day each week.
