  1. Is the prednisonse or plaquenil causing hair loss

Lupus can cause the hair on your scalp to gradually thin out, although a few people lose clumps of hair. Loss of eyebrow, eyelash, beard and body hair also is possible.

Yes, if the plaquenil controls your Lupus flares, it is best to not use the prednisone. I hope you can get off of it completely, or at least take a small maintenance dose. Take it very slow, tapering off, and if you have a reaction, severe fatigue, etc, talk to your doc, about tapering down even slower. Dec 12, 2019 If the Plaquenil was started 10 years ago and a patient reports hair loss last month, it’s not very likely that the Plaquenil is the culprit. That is often forgotten. 2. The Autoimmune Disease the Plaquenil is Used for is Causing Hair loss. Autoimmune disease can cause inflammation in the body and this type of inflammation itself can trigger hair loss in the form of a hair shedding or ‘telogen effluvium.’ Feb 08, 2020 If hair loss occurs in these individuals, the cause may actually be another chemotherapy drug. Radiation therapy, which also kills healthy cells, may also cause hair loss that occurs only in the area of the body where the radiation was given. Ultimately, the connection between prednisone and hair loss is still being explored.

But some people with lupus develop round (discoid) lesions on the scalp. In most cases, your hair will grow back when your lupus is treated.

  5. Plaquenil will eventually help your hair loss, but that will be a very slow process over a long period of time since plaquenil builds up in your body pretty slowly. And you should keep your head a scalp protected from the sun as VeeJ said.

Dec 13, 2012 Hi Carla, Hope all is well with you and Joe. After seeing my rheumatologist, he wants to put me on Plaquenil, mostly because I complained of recent onset of thinning/loss of hair which is freaking me out. But then I read about Plaquenil and its side effects and really freaked out. Prednisone causes hair loss in some people by raising levels of an androgen called dihydrotestosterone DHT. DHT is a naturally occurring byproduct of testosterone. Those who lose hair due to risen levels of DHT typically have an underlying genetic sensitivity to the hormone. Plaquenil caused some weight loss for me when I was on a higher dose. Now that I am on 200 mg. per day, I don't notice that anymore. Prednisone, on the other hand, has caused both a gain/loss, depending on the dosage. I noticed a six pound gain with Benlysta happened pretty quickly. That might change now that I am off the Benlysta.
